Expeditions sponsored by the Living Oceans Foundation have produced scientific breakthroughs over the past few years. The expeditions have been made possible by the generosity of our Chairman through access to the very capable research and logistics ship, the M/Y Golden Shadow. The Foundation has supported targeted research in the the following areas:

Ongoing Expedition:

Beginning in Spring of 2006, the Living Oceans Foundation embarked upon a series of expeditions to the Red Sea.  These began with the Farasan Islands in 2006 which included a comprehensive ecological survey of the Farasan Islands Marine Protected Area in the south-central Red Sea. Contining on to Ras Qisbah in 2007, the goals of this expedition were to map and characterize coral reefs east of Ras Qisbah, focusing on marine habitats around the islands of Al Farshah, Umm Qusur and Burqan.  Then in the North Red Sea in 2008, the Foundation focused on Yanbu Barrier Reef and Al Wajh Bank area, north of the city of Jeddah. The goal of this project was to create habitat maps, and to conduct SCUBA surveys of fish, coral, marine mammals, and benthic habitats.  Then finally in 2009,  the  Foundation travelled to the Farasan Banks and collected data needed to complete the baseline characterization and mapping of shallow marine habitats, and conduced a detailed assessment of the structure, composition and condition of shallow coral reef ecosystems.  Click here to read more about our Red Sea adventures...

Archived Expeditions:

Focusing on the southern Seychelles Islands (Indian Ocean), based on the vessel 'Golden Shadow,' the project scientists provided curriculum relevant information direct to this web-site via a near-real-time reporting process.

U.S. and Mexican scientists joined forces in the Sea of Cortez off the coast of Mexico aboard the Golden Shadow. The teams went to 12 different research sites, covering a distance of over 500 miles.

The Foundation supported an assembled team of scientists led by Professor Jaubert, from Monaco, France, Canada and the United States. Their research covered an area in the Northwest Mediterranean from Toulon, in France, all the way to the French-Italian border.

This research expedition actually occurred before the Living Oceans Foundation was formally established. The survey was of keen scientific value since it came on the heels of the severe El Nino ocean warming event in 1997/8.
