  The application period for the 2024 Science Without Borders® Challenge is now closed. Stay tuned for the announcement of the winners! This annual art contest encourages students to learn about important ocean science and conservation issues through art. The competition is open to middle and high school students 11-19 years old, with prizes of up to $500 awarded to the winning entries.

Today, a worldwide network of coral reef scientists announced that the world is currently experiencing its fourth global coral bleaching event, the second to hit reefs in the last 10 years. The announcement, made by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI), comes at a time when coral reefs are facing a number of threats to their survival. On the last day of the UN #OceanDecade Conference, we’re talking about how partnerships and collaboration can help bring people together to make an impact on the water that is much bigger than the sum of our parts. Our friends from island nations in the Pacific have been especially successful in collaborating across borders to protect their waters. We heard about efforts to map and sustainably manage all of Tonga’s waters (including setting aside 30% as no-take #MPAs), convening partners to co-design marine conservation efforts in the Pacific (including the PCOOS workshop in #Fiji we participated in), and how small island nations in the Pacific have banned together to make a plan to improve conservation across the entire ocean basin (and the #highseas). ...
