The Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025  published by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), provides the most comprehensive assessment to date of the status and trends of coral reefs worldwide, drawing on decades of monitoring data from across the globe. The report examines changes in hard coral and macroalgal cover from 1980 to 2024 and provides a global and regional evidence base to help governments, reef managers, and communities understand how coral reefs are changing and inform actions to protect them.

The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation contributed data collected during the Global Reef Expedition to this global assessment. The Foundation shared its extensive Pacific datasets, including benthic cover data collected through standardized field surveys across the region. These data were gathered during the Global Reef Expedition, a 10-year research mission that surveyed some of the most remote coral reefs on Earth and established an important scientific baseline for understanding coral reef condition and change. The Expedition conducted nearly 8,600 benthic surveys worldwide, including extensive surveys throughout the tropical Pacific.

The 2025 report brings together 21.1 million observations from 87,299 surveys at 36,886 sites, contributed by 600 partners across more than 120 countries, territories, and economies, demonstrating the extraordinary value of collaboration and long-term monitoring in understanding the changing state of the world’s coral reefs.
