Why Us
Why The Living Oceans Foundation?
The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation is a world leader in coral reef research and conservation. We have surveyed thousands of reefs, assessed their health and resiliency, and developed educational tools and outreach campaigns to improve ocean literacy and build capacity for marine conservation. We have helped communities around the world protect, preserve, and restore their coral reefs and mangrove forests. Now, we are using our experience and expertise to help others achieve their marine conservation science, outreach, and education goals.
Specialties
Assess the Health of Your Coral Reef
Our team of experts utilizes state-of-the-art scientific methods and cutting-edge technology to assess the health of reefs around the world. Through comprehensive surveys, we evaluate key indicators such as coral cover, species diversity, and reef fish communities. Our findings provide invaluable insights for conservation efforts, guiding effective strategies to protect and restore these crucial ecosystems.
Combat a Crown of Thorns Outbreak
The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation is at the forefront of efforts to combat outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS), a major threat to coral reefs. Our team conducts targeted removal operations to reduce the devastating impact of these coral-eating starfish, and works with clients to develop customized COTS management and removal strategies. Together, we can mitigate the damage caused by a COTS outbreak and ensure the resilience of our precious reefs.
Capacity Development: Training Workshops & Professional Development
The Foundation is committed to empowering communities through comprehensive capacity development programs. We offer specialized teacher trainings designed to equip educators with the knowledge and resources needed to teach students about the importance of coral reefs and mangrove forests. By integrating hands-on activities and up-to-date scientific information, we are helping teachers inspire the next generation to become stewards of the marine environment. Additionally, we provide community members with the skills necessary to monitor and manage their local reefs and mangrove forests. Through workshops and training sessions, participants learn how to conduct reef assessments, identify threats, and implement conservation strategies.

Our Clients
Ocean Conservation Clients All Across the Globe
The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation has worked with clients across the globe to survey and map coral reefs, develop customized educational materials and programs, build local capacity, provide institutions with the best available science to inform the creation of marine protected areas and coral reef management plans.
Pacific Blue Foundation
The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation partnered with the Pacific Blue Foundation to advance community-based marine conservation in Fiji. Together, we carried out extensive coral reef surveys to assess ecosystem health and resilience, while also building local capacity through training workshops for community members and resource managers. This collaboration integrated cutting-edge science with traditional knowledge, producing data that informed the design and implementation of locally managed marine protected areas.
University of Miami's Aircraft Center for Earth Studies
The Living Oceans Foundation has partnered with the Aircraft Center for Earth Studies (ACES) to revolutionize coral reef mapping through the development and application of fluid lensing technology. We collaborated to create some of the most detailed habitat maps ever produced, combining high-resolution aerial imagery with in-water survey data to capture reef structure and biodiversity with unmatched accuracy. These efforts have advanced the science of habitat mapping and provided powerful new tools to guide marine conservation and management worldwide.
KAUST
The Living Oceans Foundation partnered with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to support new habitat mapping efforts in the Red Sea, providing valuable insights into one of the world’s most unique marine environments. We look forward to building this collaboration in the future to advance marine science and conservation in the region.
National Center for Wildlife
The Living Oceans Foundation has partnered with the Saudi National Center for Wildlife (NCW) on key initiatives to advance marine conservation in the Red Sea. We provided extensive reef survey data and habitat maps that offered some of the first comprehensive insights into the region’s coral reef ecosystems. Building on this foundation, we shared our expertise to help guide marine conservation planning and inform strategies for protecting biodiversity across Saudi waters. Together, these efforts have strengthened the scientific basis for conservation and management in the Red Sea, ensuring that one of the world’s most unique marine environments is safeguarded for the future.
Marine and Coastal Biodiversity Management in Pacific Island Countries (MACBIO)
The Living Oceans Foundation partnered with MACBIO, a regional initiative jointly implemented by SPREP and IUCN, to advance marine spatial planning in Fiji, Tonga, and the Solomon Islands. Drawing on data from our Global Reef Expedition, we contributed detailed coral reef surveys, fish and benthic assessments, and high-resolution habitat and bathymetric maps. These datasets filled critical knowledge gaps and were integrated into marine spatial planning frameworks to guide the design of marine protected areas. By providing science-based information, the Foundation helped strengthen conservation efforts that safeguard biodiversity while supporting the fisheries, food security, and livelihoods of coastal communities.
UNESCO Marine World Heritage Programme
The Living Oceans Foundation has partnered with UNESCO’s Marine World Heritage Programme on multiple initiatives to advance marine conservation. First, we designed and delivered a global communications campaign to support the launch of their landmark report calling for the designation and protection of World Heritage sites on the high seas. Building on that success, UNESCO engaged us again to lead the #MyOceanPledge campaign, which combined social media, press outreach, and high-profile events at the United Nations and Explorer’s Club to raise awareness and inspire conservation action. Together, these campaigns elevated marine World Heritage protection on the global stage.
University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine. Atmospheric, and Earth Science
The Living Oceans Foundation has a long history of collaboration with the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, beginning with mapping coral reefs on our Global Reef Expedition. Today, we are partners on the NSF-funded Protist Prophets project, advancing both science and education. As part of the Broader Impacts section of the grant, the Foundation is developing the curriculum Little Creatures with a Big Message, which uses microscopic foraminifera to teach students about assessing the health of coral reefs. We are piloting these lesson plans with educators through professional development workshops, helping bring cutting-edge reef science into classrooms worldwide.
