Winners of the 2017 Science Without Borders® Challenge
The 2017 Science Without Borders® Challenge invited students to explore how marine organisms develop unique adaptations to survive in challenging environments. With the theme Reef SuperSpecies, participants imagined new species with traits that could help them withstand threats like temperature changes, predators, and shifting ocean conditions. This creative approach encouraged students to think about the incredible ways life evolves beneath the waves.
Coral reefs are home to some of the most diverse and specialized species on the planet. From fish that change color to blend into their surroundings to corals that form symbiotic relationships for survival, marine life has developed extraordinary strategies to thrive. By studying these adaptations, students gained insight into how nature responds to environmental challenges, reinforcing the idea that survival depends on the ability to change and evolve.
Through this competition, students not only expressed their creativity but also deepened their understanding of the natural world. Their artwork reflected the fascinating complexity of marine life and the importance of biodiversity in sustaining healthy ocean ecosystems.
