This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) applies to www.livingoceansfoundation.org (“Site”), any related applications (“Apps”), and any services provided by the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation (“Company,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) and governs data collection and usage. For the purposes of this Privacy Policy, unless otherwise noted, all references to the Company include www.livingoceansfoundation.org, our Apps, and related services. Collection of Information

1. General Users

The Company does not collect personally identifiable information (PII) from general users browsing our Site. However, if you voluntarily subscribe to our newsletter or complete a contact form, we may collect your first and last name and email address. You may unsubscribe from these communications at any time. 

We may also collect anonymous demographic information, such as age or gender, which is not unique to you. You may be required to provide PII when using certain services, such as:

  • Registering for an account
  • Entering contests or sweepstakes
  • Signing up for our newsletter
  • Sending emails or inquiries
  • Submitting payment information for products, services, or donations

2. International Users

The European Commission has determined that U.S. law does not provide the same level of data protection as the laws of the European Union (EU) or the United Kingdom (UK).However, the Company takes reasonable precautions to safeguard personal information in line with applicable data protection regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (EU) 2016/679.

3. Donors

When making a donation through our Site, donors may be required to provide additional PII, including name, email address, mailing address, phone number, and payment information. Donor information is never sold or shared with third parties except as necessary to process donations or comply with legal obligations. 

4. Children Under 13 (COPPA)

The Company is committed to protecting children who use our Site. This Policy is designed following the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

  • We will not collect PII from children under 13 without verifiable parental/guardian consent.
  • During registration, we may collect PII such as first and last name, grade level, school, city, state, country, gender, birthdate, and email.
  • Parents/guardians must provide consent via through the online registration process. An email will be sent to the parent/guardian to confirm consent before a child’s account is activated.
  • Parents/guardians can review, update, or request deletion of their child’s information and may refuse further collection or use of their child’s data.
  • Children will not be able to access certain features or participate in programs if parental/guardian consent is not provided.
  • If provided, the child’s email may be used to communicate about login information or educational opportunities, with an option to opt out of unrelated communications.

5. Science Without Borders® Challenge Participants

Participation in the Science Without Borders® Challenge does not require account creation.

For students participating in the Science Without Borders® Challenge, we may collect personally identifiable information (PII), including participants’ first and last name, age, grade, school name, teacher sponsor, and parent/guardian contact information (email, phone).

The information collected for the Science Without Borders® Challenge is used to confirm that students meet the contest’s age and grade eligibility requirements, to communicate important contest-related information to participants (over the age of 13), teacher sponsors, and parents or guardians, and to provide updates, instructions, or other necessary communications throughout the contest.

By submitting artwork, participants grant the Company the right, but not the obligation, to use or display their artwork and optionally provided PII (such as name, school, country, and age) in connection with the Science Without Borders® Challenge, including for promotional, educational, or communications purposes.

For participants under 13, any use of their PII is subject to verifiable parental/guardian consent. Parents/guardians may request that their child’s PII not be used, and the Company will honor such requests.

6. Education Portal Users

Some parts of the Education Portal are publicly accessible, while certain features, such as interactive courses, progress tracking, or assignment submission, require account creation. To register, users provide PII including first and last name, email address, school, grade level, and, for students under 13, parent/guardian contact information. 

This information is used to provide access to restricted features, track educational progress and engagement, communicate important updates, course notifications, or program-related information, and to support and enhance the overall learning experience for users/

7. Surveys & Contests

From time to time, our site requests information via surveys or contests. Participation in these surveys or contests is completely voluntary, and you may choose whether or not to participate and therefore disclose this information. Information requested may include contact information (such as name and shipping address), and demographic information (such as zip code, age level). Contact information will be used to notify the winners and award prizes. Survey information will be used to monitor and improve the use and satisfaction of this site.

8. Apps

When using our Apps hosted on external Sites, we may collect information such as your name, email address, phone number, and device information. Additionally, we may collect data about how you use the App, such as the features that you use most often and how often you use the App. This information may be collected to enhance our services and understand how to improve the App. We take the utmost precautions to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, disclosure, or misuse and will never share it with third parties unless legally required to do so. By using our Apps, you consent to the collection and use of your personal information as outlined in this Policy.

9. Automatically Collected Information 

The Company may automatically collect information about your computer hardware and software. This may include:

  • Your IP address, browser type, and device details (like computer, phone, or tablet).
  • The pages you visit, the links you click, and how long you spend on our site.
  • General location information (if your device settings allow).

For example, donations and payments are processed through Donorbox, which meets industry-standard security requirements. User information for the Education Portal is stored with access controls and encryption. Firewalls, malware scanning, and tools such as Cloudflare and Wordfence further protect our Site. Emails are sent using secure protocols, and users can manage their subscription preferences at any time.

Access to personal information is restricted to employees and authorized personnel who need it to perform their job responsibilities (such as billing or customer service).

While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. By using our services, you acknowledge that we cannot guarantee the absolute security of your information.

Right to Deletion

Subject to certain exceptions set out below, on receipt of a verifiable request from you, we will: 

  • Delete your personal information from our records; 
  • Change/correct any data we have about you; and 
  • Direct any service providers to delete your personal information from their records.

Additionally, when you receive updates from us via email broadcast, there will always be an unsubscribe link at the bottom of all our broadcast emails, giving you the option to remove your email address from our email list.

We may deny your deletion request if keeping the information is necessary for us or our service providers to:

  • Complete a transaction you requested or provide a service you asked for;
