Coral Reef Educator on the Water (C.R.E.W.)
Marine Science Teachers

The Coral Reef Educator on the Water (C.R.E.W.) program offered high school science teachers the opportunity to join the Global Reef Expedition on one of its missions aboard our research ships. The program was designed to give first-hand experience of life on board a working scientific research vessel, a greater understanding of the importance of coral reefs, and inspiration to convey what they have learned to their students and members of their community.

As part of the Global Reef Expedition, each C.R.E.W. participant worked with the science team to develop educational content and lesson plans, hosted a live Q&A session for students on board the ship, and developed a conservation action challenge for their classroom. They also participated in educational outreach efforts to share our knowledge of coral reefs with local students, teachers, and community members, where we conducted research.

C.R.E.W. Participants:

  • Candice Jwaszko, Ecole Paul Kane High School in St. Albert, Alberta, Canada
  • Mike Trimble, Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, Arizona, USA
  • Megan Berkle, Linda Esperanza Marquez High School in Huntington Park, California, USA
  • Jim Evans, Schools Without Walls in Washington, DC, USA

I may not always remember every name, but I remember the expressions — the hesitation before stepping into thick mud, the laughter when someone loses a shoe, the look of surprise when they catch that unmistakable sulfur smell rising from the mangrove soil…

World Oceans Day: Protecting the Ecosystems That Protect Us

This World Oceans Day, the global community is being challenged to think differently about the ocean.

The 2026 World Oceans Day theme, “Reimagine: Beyond the World We Know, A New Relationship With Our Ocean,” invites us to recognize that the ocean is not something distant or separate from our lives. It regulates our climate, supports our economies, provides food for billions of people, and sustains the natural systems that make life on Earth possible.

Few places illustrate this connection more clearly than the coastal ecosystems that protect our shores and support marine life. While coral reefs, mangrove forests, and seagrass meadows are often…
