Join us for our first #NavigateWithCare webinar

Every boat on the water has the power to protect—or harm—our ocean. That’s the message at the heart of Navigate with Care: Protect Our Oceans, a global campaign from the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation and the International Foundation for Aids to Navigation (IFAN). An official activity of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, this campaign aims to promote safe and environmentally responsible boating practices that safeguard both people and marine ecosystems.

As part of this initiative, we are hosting a free, four-part webinar series to empower mariners, conservationists, and ocean advocates with practical knowledge to protect the ocean through safe navigation.

We hope you’ll join us for the first event in the series:

Navigate with Care: Introduction to Safe Navigation

Thursday, July 24, 2025
10:00 AM EDT / 4:00 PM CEST

This inaugural webinar will explore the fundamentals of safe navigation and highlight how mariners can help prevent groundings, anchor damage, and collisions with marine life. Our panel of experts will share real-world insights on using Aids to Navigation (AtoNs), following international maritime regulations, and planning routes that avoid sensitive marine habitats.

Whether you operate a cargo ship, ferry, fishing vessel, sailboat, or kayak—or simply care about the health of the ocean—this webinar is for you. Safe boating is not only about protecting lives at sea—it’s also a powerful way to protect the reefs, seagrasses, mangroves, and marine animals that keep our ocean thriving.

This is just the beginning. The Navigate with Care series will go on to explore topics such as the environmental impacts of boating, the importance of AtoNs, and how nature-based solutions like coral reefs contribute to both maritime safety and coastal resilience.

Don’t miss a session—sign up for our newsletter to stay informed about upcoming webinars, campaign news, and new resources to help you navigate with care.

Together, we can navigate with care—and chart a safer course for our ocean.

After the Storm: Standing with Our J.A.M.I.N. Family in Jamaica

There are moments in this work that feel heartbreakingly familiar.

Two weeks after we completed our Jamaica Awareness of Mangroves in Nature (J.A.M.I.N.) programming, Hurricane Melissa made landfall. A powerful Category 5 hurricane, Melissa is now tied with Hurricane Allen in 1980 for the strongest winds ever recorded in an Atlantic storm. Like Hurricane Dorian, which devastated The Bahamas in 2019, Melissa will be remembered as one of the strongest hurricanes on record in the region.

For 11 years, the University of the West Indies Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory and William Knibb Memorial High School have been more than program partners. They have welcomed us into their classrooms and labs, shared meals and laughter, and committed themselves to educating their students about mangroves and coastal resilience. These colleagues and students are not distant collaborators. They are family.

And they were hit hard…

B.A.M. Turns 10: A Year of Milestones, Resilience, and Growth

The 2025–2026 academic year was one of those defining years for our Bahamas Awareness of Mangroves (B.A.M.) and Jamaica Awareness of Mangroves in Nature (J.A.M.I.N.) programs. It was a year marked by celebration, challenge, growth, and powerful full-circle moments, and a reminder of why mangrove education matters.

In The Bahamas, B.A.M. reached a major milestone: ten years of partnership and environmental education in Abaco. Since 2015, in collaboration with Friends of the Environment, we have worked alongside Patrick J. Bethel High School and Forest Heights Academy to bring hands-on mangrove science into classrooms and into the field. This year, we were proud to expand the program to S.C. Bootle High School, increasing access for students who live…
