LANDOVER, MD., May 14, 2013 – The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation is leading a community cleanup of an urban wetland situated inside the Washington DC beltway. The Foundation’s headquarters lie within a small urban wetland in Landover, MD that drains to the Chesapeake Bay. Cleaning up at the source of pollution is the first step toward a healthier ocean, the main purpose of the Foundation.
Living Oceans Executive Director, Philip Renaud, said, “Water is one of our most precious natural resources and clean water sustains all life on earth. Urban sprawl degrades the watershed and pollutes streams, rivers, and the oceans. We’re pleased to clean-up the urban wetland behind our office because actions speak louder than words.”
The Living Oceans Foundation is currently in their third year of a six-year Global Reef Expedition to survey and characterize some of the world’s most remote and little known reefs. Scientific data from the Expedition will assist in identifying sites of high priority for protection and will help to develop conservation strategies that mitigate human impacts and improve reef resiliency.
The Living Oceans Foundation is honored to be partnering with the Alice Ferguson Foundation for this community cleanup through their “Trash Free Potomac Watershed Initiative.” The public is invited to join this cleanup and should meet at the New Carrollton Metro East Business Community, back parking lot of 8181 Professional Place,
Landover, MD at 11am, May 17th. Anyone is welcome to join the cleanup and all cleanup supplies will be provided.
