It is with great pleasure and excitement that we announce the release of the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation’s 2023 Annual Report. This report encapsulates the dedication, hard work, and remarkable achievements of our foundation over the past year in our ongoing mission to protect, preserve, and restore the health of our oceans.

More than two decades ago, our founder, Prince Khaled bin Sultan, established the Living Oceans Foundation with a vision to safeguard the oceans for future generations. Today, we are proud to carry forward his legacy and commitment to marine conservation.

The 2023 Annual Report reflects the efforts of our foundation to pursue “Science Without Borders®.” From conducting groundbreaking research to fostering community engagement and advocating for ocean conservation on a global scale, we have made significant strides in our mission.

One of the highlights of the past year was to use the knowledge we gained from our Global Reef Expedition (GRE) for conservation, providing invaluable data and insights into the state of coral reefs worldwide. Through collaborations with organizations such as the Pacific Blue Foundation and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, we are leveraging this data to develop innovative solutions for coral reef monitoring and conservation.

Our foundation’s commitment to community engagement was exemplified by our involvement in projects such as our UN Ocean Decade Project and our Mangrove Education and Restoration program. By working closely with local communities in Fiji and the Caribbean, we are empowering individuals to become stewards of their marine environments.

Furthermore, our participation in international conferences and events, including the COP28 climate change conference and the Foundations Dialogue Meeting in Monaco, underscored our dedication to forging partnerships and advocating for ocean conservation at the highest levels.

The 2023 Annual Report also highlights our educational initiatives, such as the Science Without Borders® Challenge and the development of new and innovative educational materials, including a new virtual reality application called “Virtual Reef Expedition.” Through these programs, we are inspiring the next generation of ocean stewards and fostering a deeper understanding of marine conservation among students around the world.

As we reflect on the past year’s achievements, we are reminded of the urgent need to redouble our efforts to address the many challenges facing our oceans. Climate change, habitat destruction, and overexploitation of marine resources continue to threaten the health and vitality of our marine ecosystems.

However, we remain optimistic about the future, knowing that by working together, we can make a meaningful difference in the protection and restoration of our living oceans. We invite you to join us in our efforts to preserve, protect, and restore our oceans for future generations.

Together, we can work towards healthy oceans for all.

Ten Years of B.A.M.: Rooted in Partnership, Growing in Purpose

Ten years ago, the Bahamas Awareness of Mangroves (B.A.M.) program began with a simple but meaningful commitment: to connect Bahamian students with the mangrove ecosystems that shape and protect their island home.

Since 2015, B.A.M. has been implemented in partnership with Friends of the Environment, whose dedication to environmental stewardship in Abaco has made this program possible year after year. Together, we have worked alongside Patrick J. Bethel High School and Forest Heights Academy to bring hands-on mangrove science into classrooms and out into the field.

What makes ten years remarkable is not just longevity — it is consistency…

From Mangrove Mud to Meaningful Work: Desta’s J.A.M.I.N. Journey

Some students I remember for their grades, their quick answers, or a moment that made the whole class laugh. Others I remember for the way they stepped into the mangroves.

Desta was the kind of student who thrived outdoors. While some students hesitated at the edge of the mud, he walked right in. And when he inevitably got stuck — because everyone does — he didn’t get frustrated. He laughed. Covered in mud, holding mangrove propagules in his hands, he embraced the experience fully.

Even then, it was clear that he was connecting with the environment in a way that went beyond the lesson plan…
