The Coral Reef Educator on the Water (CREW) program offers high school teachers the opportunity to join the Global Reef Expedition (GRE). The CREW program is designed to give first-hand experience of life on board a working scientific research vessel, a greater understanding of the importance of coral reefs, and inspiration to convey what they have learned to their students and members of their community. The CREW participant will join the research vessel, the M/Y Golden Shadow, during the French Polynesia portion of the Expedition.

All costs of the CREW program are covered by the Living Oceans Foundation. Travel and local transportation is arranged by the Foundation. In addition, the Global Reef Expedition will reimburse the participant’s school for a substitute teacher while on the mission to French Polynesia.

In March 2012, Mike Trimble, a teacher from Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, Arizona, became the very first CREW participant to join the Expedition. Read about his reflections on board the M/Y Golden Shadow.

CREW participants utilize leading-edge technologies including internet curricula, social networks, blogs, and real-time streaming video.
