2020 Science Without Borders® Challenge: Middle School Finalists
Congratulations to the middle school finalists in our 2020 Science Without Borders® Challenge! This international student art competition aims to engage middle students in ocean conservation through art. This year we asked students to illustrate things people can do to help save coral reefs–and boy did they deliver!
"The Choices We Make" by Justin Kim, Age 13, United States
Coral reefs are homes to 25% of all living organisms in the ocean. They act as trees in the ocean, to take in carbon dioxide dissolved in water, go through photosynthesis, and emit oxygen as a byproduct. The oxygen is needed by the fish. However, humans discard trash into the habitat of billions of lives, for our own good and selfishness. In my artwork, I drew a handmade of ice pulling on a cord that is powering a lamp. The lamp is the source of garbage. I wanted to show that humans could stop destroying the ocean for our own goods and focus our attention on maintaining a healthy environment for plants and animals.
