Marie Kospartov completed her Bachelor of Science in 2000 from James Cook University Australia, with her Honours thesis on spatial variation in coral population dynamics. She has since specialised in the identification of living and fossil reef corals, and has conducted coral biodiversity, biogeography and monitoring surveys throughout many parts of the Indo-Pacific for university, government and conservation organisations. She has also worked in temperate New Zealand waters focusing on marine biosecurity, and in ecotourism both on Queensland reefs and on an expedition ship in Antarctica and the Arctic. This will be her third coral reef survey expedition to French Polynesia, but her first to Gambier.
