By many measures, 2010 was a notable year for the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation. This year, the Foundation turned ten years old. From my perspective, the first ten years of the Living Oceans Foundation represented the organization’s first generation. This was a time of formation, discovery, learning experiences, capacity building and refining of capabilities. The Foundation is now poised to embark upon its second generation.
The theme for our 2009 annual report is “People, Passion, Progress.” That slogan truly captures the essence of the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation. Given our scientific nature, I converted that slogan into an equation for success: People + Passion = Progress.
The year 2008 was a period of impressive growth and visibility for the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation. By far, the most exciting development this past year was the formal announcement by Prince Khaled bin Sultan during the World Conservation Congress of our upcoming multi-year program titled Global Reef Expedition: Science Without Borders®. This ambitious program will begin in 2010 at which time we will commence our global circumnavigation on the capable research ship, Golden Shadow.
I am pleased to report that the year 2007 was punctuated by several major milestones. Through Project SeaCAMEL (Classroom Aquarius Marine Education Live), an inspiration became a reality! The Foundation’s first documentary film, Our Coral Islands, was selected to be shown in the Conservation Cinema at the Barcelona World Conservation Congress in October, 2008.
